Ethical issues continue to affect the dispensation of care in the multicultural counseling context. Counselors are increasingly dealing with issues of clients from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, they have to come up with appropriate strategies and intervention that are sensitive to the different individual attributes such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, age, socioeconomic status and nationality. Some of the ethical issues that arise in a multicultural setting include the need for protecting the privacy or confidentiality of clients, applying culturally competent counseling practices, obtaining informed consent from the client before commencing with the interventions, striving to avoid harm to patients and their families as well as maintaining boundaries in the professional counseling relationship. I can’t remember the last time I had a full 7 or 8 hour sleep. My sleep pattern now seems to consist of barely any naps and close to 4 or 5 hours of sleep. Trio, by Edwin Morgan Essay Trio, by Edwin Morgan, is a poem that deals with a chance encounter one winter evening in Glasgow. The poet happened to notice a passing group, or two girls and a boy, whose very happiness seemed to radiate from them in a tangible form. It is this momentary incident which prompts Morgan to search for some deeper meaning behind the trios joy, and consider humanitys ability to draw happiness from apparently mundane sources. To bring across these ideas, and his strength of conviction, the poet employs a variety of techniques. It is how he uses these to such effect in conveying the life-enhancing themes of the poem that I intend to investigate. From the very onset of the poem, the idea of a trio is clearly important; not only as the title, but in several connotations which will be brought out in the duration of the passage. Musically, a Trio consists of a group of three musicians working together harmoniously to produce music a positive effect, allowing more complex, intricate music patterns. Religiously, too, the word Trio holds significance; as a Hebrew number of completion; the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the three Magi of the nativity story; and the three crosses of the Crucifixion. All of these are seen as having positive influences on people, and concepts that will be elaborated on later in the poem are introduced to the readers mind with this title. Significant detail is used to establish a particular setting in this case, Buchanan Street, in Glasgow, on a Sharp winter evening, where the poet notices A young man and two girls presumably the Trio that is to feature in the poem. In addition to this more obvious technique, Morgan also employs control of line length and sentence structure, to create, from early in the poem, a feeling of tension and drama. By ending the first line with quickly, on a sharp winter evening, the reader is uncertain as to whether such a description is negative or positive winter and sharp, coupled with night-time, hold many negative connotations, of discomfort and cold, and traditional fear of the night, thus raising tension in the reader. In addition to this, the sentence structure echoes the words themselves, quickly, with short sharp words, the sentences filled with numerous commas, starts and stops. In the second line, parenthesis is employed in the dash, signalling a train of thought in the poets mind, an epiphany, where he receives a sudden, dramatic personal insight into the scene before him, which will continue for most of the poem. Inversion is also used to heighten the tension in the first two lines of the poem, where Morgan withholds the information as to who the poem is about until the second line, rather than the more conventional first. This constant change, moving towards climax and anti-climax, is added to with the use of the non-sentence, and the purely present tense used when describing an event past; coming up still changing, even in the poets memory? Despite the musical connotations of Trio, of three people united for a common cause, Morgan originally creates an impression of the young people as separates, individuals, rather than a group. Each person is allocated their own line for their description, via the control of line length, and is referred to in the singular, not the plural; The young man the girl the girl. In addition to this, each is described not by what features they share, but by the different things they are carrying; a guitar, a baby, a Chihuahua. Each person separate, individual, carrying a different object. However, this initial impression is to be short lived; in the following lines, and indeed for the remainder of the poem, Morgan conveys the sense of how the three are united in happiness. This is brought out in how all references to the three are now in the plural, no longer referring to individuals, but to a group; the three their they. Acting together simultaneously, their happiness reflected in each other, with the word choice further bringing out this idea. Laughing clearly implies happiness and joy, as does the imagery of their breath rising up in a Cloud of happiness, laughing out their pleasure and contentment, frosted breath mingling harmoniously in one cloud. This cloud image seems almost a reversion of the traditional cloud of misery idea, of bad luck and despair following the unfortunate target instead, happiness flourishes around this trio. One particular thing that a poet can do is reveal the wonderful and miraculous within the mundane and ordinary. In Trio Morgan uses this to good effect with the dialogue of Wait till he sees this but! The particular dialect helps to embed the incident in the real world, as the practice of ending a sentence with but is peculiar to the Glasgow area realistic, and as such, imaginable to the reader, lending credibility to the rest of the poets epiphany. It also conveys the sense of the dramatic which was established in the opening lines, as two unknown factors are introduced to the reader, leading them to speculate as to who he is, and what, exactly, has been bought for him to cause such excitement and exclamation. In addition to this, the picture of three people, carrying gifts, things that are precious to them, has overtones leading back to the title, with the three magi who brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Now that the Christian analogy has been signalled, the poet goes on to consider the gifts that these young people are carrying. In an apostrophe, the poet characterises these gifts as Orphean sprig! Melting baby! Warm Chihuahua! The reference to Orpheus, a character of Greek legend as a poet and skilled lyre player, has associations of music, and stringed instruments as both lyre and guitar are stringed. However, while Orphean seems to refer to the guitar, there is more than one possible interpretation. The guitar was earlier described as being tied at the neck with silver tinsel tape and a brisk sprig of mistletoe. This sprig could be the one mentioned later in the poem, and as mistletoe is traditionally kissed under at Christmas time, the poet is bringing connotations of love and happiness to the concept of music, as well as the traditional viewing of plants and the natural world as healthy and positive. With Melting baby! Morgan is not only talking about the standard descriptions of babies melting peoples hearts but also the idea that the baby is literally generating warmth, via body heat and therefore melting the edge off the frost laced wind on that sharp evening. There are even sickeningly sweet overtones of the saying butter wouldnt melt in his mouth, portraying the baby as completely innocent, perhaps furthering the religious connotations of the baby Jesus. The idea of warmth is furthered with Warm Chihuahua! both in terms of the dog being warm, wrapped up in a tartan coat and its body heat lending warmth to those around it. Warmth has always has positive connotations, at least in terms of on a freezing night, so these gifts add up to create a very positive, comforting effect, despite their initial diversity, brought together by the poets representation of the group through word choice and imagery. Throughout the poem, it is clear that the poet considers these gifts to be of some symbolic importance. Though exactly what their significance consists of is not made clear until the end of the poem, the change in tone and register when discussing them makes it clear that what they do symbolise is very important in the poets eyes. The register becomes increasingly complex and allusive with references to vale of tears, Christ is born, or is not born and abdicates all very formal, serious language, laced with biblical references. Vale of tears in the Bible refers to the world which we live in, full of hardship and suffering, and how only through Christ, and His sacrifice, do we find true freedom and happiness and escape. Yet the poet does not seem to be pushing this idea rather, with Whether Christ is born, or is not born he seems to be saying that it is irrelevant, that it is, in fact, through ourselves that people find true happiness, however briefly. After reading I have found that Hinduism differs from other religious groups because they believe in reincarnation whereas the other religious groups believe that once a person dies they either will go to heaven or hell depending on how they were when they were alive. The experience of Hinduism and others that do not share their beliefs or practices is criticism. They are often judged and criticized because they fail to distinguish between revelations. Orwell describes doublethink as “the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.'; In 1984, doublethink is the normal way of thought, and as a result everyone understands it and practices it. Doublethink is different from changing ones mind, lying, and self-deception in many ways. Doublethink involves believing in the two contradictory ideas at the same time. This is different from lying because lying is saying something that is wrong and knowing that it is wrong but still saying it anyway. For example lets say you broke a vase. When your mother asks you who broke the vase and you say the dog did it that would be lying. The reason it is not doublethink is that you do not believe in two different beliefs at one time. You don’t believe you broke the vase and the dog broke the vase, you absolutely know you broke the vase and are trying to put the blame on the dog as to avoid trouble. Changing ones mind is also different from doublethink. Changing ones mind is accepting or believing one thing, then deciding to accept or believe something else different then what you thought before. An example of changing ones mind would believe the earth is flat and then after seeing sufficient evidence that it is not flat but actually round. Due to the new evidence you would change your mind and now believe the earth is round as you previously thought it was flat. This is clearly different from doublethink because you are not believing in two ideas at the same time and accepting both. You are believing one thing, then completely change your mind and believing in another. Changing ones mind involves completely dismissing one idea to believe in the other, which means you, cannot believe in both at the same time. Finally doublethink is also different from self-deception. Self-deception is to mislead or be unfaithful to the way someone perceives him or her self or to mislead the way they th ink about something else. Self-deception would be the closet to doublethink then the other two examples given before. However it still is different from doublethink. With self-deception you are fooling yourself to believe something that really is not true. Standardized test scores. It can be a lot to take in. If you’re taking the ACT, you might be worried about how you’ll do. What’s the worst score you could get? What’s the worst score you could get and still have a shot at your dream program? In this article, I’ll break down the lowest possible ACT score, and why you’re not likely to get it. Then I’ll discuss the minimum ACTscore for college admissions, how to choose colleges based on your score (whatever it may be), how to set a score goal based on your colleges of choice, and finally what you can do if you feel like your ACT score is too low for any of your desired schools. What's the Lowest ACT Score You Can Get? The ACT is scored from 1-36 on a composite scale. This means the minimum ACT score you could possibly receive- for example, if you showed up to the testing center and filled in every bubble on your entire scantron sheet- is a 1.The composite score is obtained from taking the average of your 4 section scores and rounding; .5 is rounded up. So to get a composite score of 1, you would have to get either 1 on each section score or three 1s and a 2. The average ACT score is a 21. The 25th percentile score is 16, and the 75th percentile score is a 24. This means that if you got a 16, you would have scored better than 25% of all test-takers. In the 75th percentile, you’ve scored better than 75% of test-takers, and so one. To give you an idea of how rare a score of 1 is, a composite score ranging anywhere from 1 to 11 would put you in the 1st percentile- meaning 99% of test-takers scored higher than 11. For individual sections, 99% of test-takers scored higher than 7 in English, 99% scored higher than 12 in Math, 99% scored higher than 9 in Reading, and 99% scored higher than 11 in Science.Even if you guessed on every question, you’d get a composite score around 11-13.Thus, it is very unlikely that you will get the lowest possible score- or even a score lower than 11- on the ACT. Even this guy got an 11! What’s the Lowest ACT Score You Can Have and Still Get Into College? Since it’s pretty unlikely that you would get the minimum ACT score, you might be more interested in knowing what is the lowest possible score you could have and still have a shot at getting into college. The answer to that question is that it depends- primarily on what colleges you are applying to, but also to a certain extent on your other qualifications. For more selective schools, you’ll need a much higher ACT score to have a shot than for less selective ones. If you’re aiming for an elite institution like University of Chicago or Princeton, you’ll need to score at least 30, and that would be on the low end for one of those schools. By contrast, you might still have a shot at a selective public school like University of Illinois with a 25 or 26. Smaller state schoolslocal to you often accept scores in the 18-22 range. In fact, public universities often have special admissions criteria for residents that allow or compensate for lower standardized test scores. For example, publicly funded Texas universities generally guarantee admission to those in the top 10% of any graduating high school class in Texas, although some have lowered the cap to the top 7 or 8% in recent years due to space concerns. You may still need to submit test scores for these schools, but they won’t keep you from being admitted. Specialized schools like art schools and music conservatories also often have lower standardized test requirements of their students, as a student’s creative work is the primary criteria for admission. Mime school only accepts your test scores if you can silently act them out. The truth is that it’s difficult to give a hard-and-fast rule as to the absolute minimum ACT score for college. Colleges and universities admit candidates along a range of test scores, although the band is narrower at more selective universities. However, you can get a general idea of what is the lowest score you could get and still have even a realistic chance at admission based on a great statistic called â€Å"the middle 50%.† The middle 50% is a statistic that most schools provide on their admissions websites that gives the test score range of the 25th to the 75th percentiles of their own admitted student pool (i.e. 25% of admits had test scores below this range, 50% had test scores in this range, and 25% had test scores above this range). This is a reliable way to figure out the scoring threshold necessary to be a viable candidate for admission. As to the lowest score you can get and still have a shot, I would say to place that mark a little (think around 1 point) below the bottom number of the middle 50%. Of course, if you pick a score that’s just a little below the 25th percentile, that does mean that people with a lower score than your â€Å"low score threshold† probably got in. There are always outliers and exceptions in the college admissions process- people who had other specific qualifications or strengths that the institution thought would be valuable. No doubt you also have unique strengths and talents that you should emphasize in college applications! But you should never assume that you are going to be one of the outliers who gets in with an ACT score at the lowest conceivable end of the admit range. That doesn’t mean don’t apply if your dream school’s middle 50% is 28-32 and you got a 26. Just be realistic that it’s quite areach school for you, and you’ll really need to differentiate yourself in other ways if you want to have a chance.By contrast, if your score is a decent cut above the 75th percentile mark (think 2+ points), you’re in a great position. Choosing a college is just like choosing a pumpkin, except completely different. Choosing Schools to Apply to Based on Your ACT Score If you already got your ACT score, you may be wondering how to pick which schools to apply to. In general, you’ll want to apply to some safety schools, some match schools, and some reach schools. A safety school is one where you are more qualified than the typical admitted student, a match school is one where you are as qualified as the typical student, and a reach school is one where you areless qualified than the typical student. This means that in terms of ACT scores, a safety school is one where your score well exceeds the middle 50% range (think 2+ points), a match school is one where you fall in within or just above the middle 50%, and a reach school is one where you fall in the bottom end of or just below the middle 50%. Very selective schools (think the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, University of Chicago, etc.) are a reach for everyone because they are so competitive. Let’s say Jared got a 24 on his ACT. How should we classify the following schools he is interested in: as safety, match, or reach? Northeastern Illinois University – middle 50% range: 16-21 With a score 3 points about NIU’s middle 50%, we can consider this one a safety school. Jared’s scores would put him the top quarter of applicants by a wide margin. Illinois State University – middle 50% range: 21-26 With a score right above the midpoint of ISU’s middle 50%, ISU would be a match school for Jared. Bard College – middle 50% range: 24-30 Because he is at the very bottom of the middle 50% range for Bard, we would consider Bard a reach school. Not a huge or unreasonable reach, but still a reach, as around 75% of applicants had better scores than Jared. He’ll really need for the rest of his application to be stellar. Depaul University – middle 50% range: 23-28 Jared is within the middle 50% at Depaul, but on the lower end (only one point about the bottom of the margin).
